Why Does AC Lose Freon?

A sealed AC does not lose refrigerant. If yours is low, something is leaking — usually a corroded pipe or a loose fitting, which Bali's salt air makes common.

So we find the leak first, fix it, then refill. A top-up without that is money you spend again next month.

What the job actually involves

A split system does not consume refrigerant. It is a sealed circuit, so if the gas is low it went somewhere, and the useful part of this job is finding out where. We check pressure against the unit's specification, look for oil traces at the flare joints and along the pipe run, and pressure-test where the reading suggests a leak rather than simple undercharge. A top-up for a 0.5–1 PK unit is Rp325,000 and a full refill Rp350,000; larger capacities are listed separately. We match the refrigerant your unit is designed for — R32, R410A or R22 — because mixing them damages the compressor.

When the work is worth doing

The single most common thing done badly in this trade is topping up a leaking system without mentioning the leak. It works for a few weeks, the customer comes back, and they pay for gas a second and third time. If we find a leak we quote the repair — leak detection and repair starts at Rp250,000 — and let you decide, rather than filling it and staying quiet. It is also worth knowing that weak cooling is more often a blocked coil than low gas: if the pressure reads normal we will tell you the unit needs cleaning at Rp125,000, not refrigerant.

How do I know my AC needs freon?

It runs but does not cool, ice forms on the pipes, or you hear hissing.

What type of refrigerant does my AC use?

R22 on older units, R32 or R410A on newer ones. We check the label first.

How long does a freon refill take?

30–60 minutes, including the leak check and refill to pressure.

Is freon refill included in AC cleaning?

No, it is separate. If we spot weak cooling during a clean, we check and tell you.
