AC Care Guide

Why Your AC Electricity Bill Is High in Bali

Air conditioning is usually the biggest line on a Bali electricity bill. What makes a unit run expensive — and the fixes that actually bring the cost down.

A dirty coil is the most common cause

The evaporator coil moves heat out of the room. When dust, soot or mould coats it, the coil is insulated instead of exposed — so the unit cools the room more slowly while drawing the same power, and the compressor runs far longer to reach the same temperature. The bill climbs months before anyone thinks the unit is dirty, because the AC still works — it just never rests.

This is why cleaning pays for itself: a standard indoor + outdoor clean is Rp125K per 0.5–1 PK unit, against a bill that has quietly grown every month. If the unit has not been cleaned in a year or more, a deep clean (Rp250K–Rp300K by capacity) is the reset that actually restores the coil.

The thermostat setting costs more than people think

Every degree lower forces the unit to work harder for longer — setting 18°C does not cool the room faster than 24°C, it just moves the finish line further away and keeps the compressor running after the room is comfortable. In Bali’s climate, 24–26°C with a decent fan speed keeps a bedroom comfortable for a fraction of the runtime that an 18°C setting demands.

Use sleep mode or a timer overnight: the body needs less cooling once asleep, and eight hours of unnecessary low setpoint is the most expensive part of many bills.

Low refrigerant makes a unit run forever

A unit low on freon still blows air — just not cold enough to ever reach the setpoint. So it runs continuously, all day or all night, achieving little. If a room used to cool in twenty minutes and now takes an hour, refrigerant is one of the first things to check, and low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere rather than normal usage.

We check pressure and refrigerant type before quoting: a top-up starts at Rp325K and a full refill at Rp350K for a 0.5–1 PK unit. Refilling without finding the leak only rents you a few cool months, which is why the check comes first.

An undersized unit never stops

A 0.5 PK unit in a large, sun-facing room with a hot roof will run at full output permanently and still struggle. Continuous full-load running is the most expensive way to operate a compressor and the fastest way to wear it out. If a unit has never coped with its room, the honest fix is the right capacity, not more cleaning.

The room itself is part of the bill

The AC pays for every watt of heat that enters the room. The cheap wins:

  • Keep doors and windows actually closed while the unit runs — a gap runs the compressor continuously.
  • Shade sun-facing glass in the afternoon; direct sun through a window is a heater aimed at your thermostat.
  • Give the outdoor unit clear airflow — a condenser boxed into a niche or covered by plants re-breathes its own hot air.
  • In villas, check that the ceiling space is ventilated; a hot roof cavity radiates heat into bedrooms all evening.

When an inverter unit is worth it

An inverter compressor slows down instead of switching off and on, which suits rooms that run their AC for many hours a day — bedrooms, offices, villa living rooms. For a unit that runs an hour or two a day, the saving may never repay the price difference. Our guide to choosing an AC for Bali covers the sizing and inverter decision in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Will cleaning really lower my bill?

Yes, if the coil is dirty — the unit reaches temperature sooner and rests more. It will not fix a bill driven by an 18°C setpoint, open doors or an undersized unit, which is why this guide covers all of them.

What temperature should I set in Bali?

24–26°C for living spaces, with sleep mode or a timer overnight. Lower settings do not cool the room faster; they only extend how long the compressor runs.

My AC runs all night and the room is still warm. Is that an electricity problem?

It is usually a dirty coil, low refrigerant or an undersized unit — all three make a unit run continuously. Diagnosis is Rp65K and is deducted if you approve the repair.

Should I replace an old unit to save power?

Sometimes. If an old non-inverter unit runs many hours daily and already needs a repair, a new inverter unit can be the better spend. If the unit is healthy, start with cleaning and the settings — they cost far less than replacement.
