Size it to the room (PK and BTU)
In Indonesia AC capacity is sold in PK (paardenkracht / horsepower); internationally it is measured in BTU. The most common mistake is buying a unit that is too small for Bali, where heat and humidity push the real load higher than a sizing chart from a cooler country suggests.
As a practical starting point for a Bali bedroom or living room:
- ½ PK (≈5,000 BTU)small room up to about 10 m²
- 1 PK (≈9,000 BTU)room of about 14–18 m²
- 1.5 PK (≈12,000 BTU)room of about 18–24 m²
- 2 PK (≈18,000 BTU)room of about 24–36 m²
Account for Bali-specific heat load
Those numbers go up if the room has extra heat load. Add capacity when:
- The room faces direct afternoon sun or has a lot of glass.
- Ceilings are high or the roof is uninsulated (common in villas).
- The kitchen, many people, or electronics share the space.
- It is an open-plan or semi-outdoor area typical of Bali design.
Inverter vs non-inverter
A non-inverter unit runs at full power then switches off and on. An inverter unit varies its speed to hold the temperature steadily. For Bali, where the AC may run many hours a day, an inverter is almost always the better choice: it uses less electricity over long runtimes, cools more evenly and is quieter.
A non-inverter only makes sense for a room used briefly and rarely, where the lower purchase price outweighs running cost.
Refrigerant: R32 vs R410A vs R22
Modern units sold today mostly use R32, which is energy-efficient and has a lower environmental impact. Some units still use R410A. Older equipment may run on R22, which is being phased out and is more expensive to top up.
For a new purchase, choose R32. It is the current standard and efficient. Mr Cooler prices a freon top-up at Rp325K for 0.5–1 PK units after a pressure and leak-sign check. Avoid buying anything still using R22.
Brands and installation
All major brands sold in Indonesia — Daikin, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Gree and others — make reliable units across price points. For Bali, prioritise a model rated for tropical / high-ambient conditions and one with parts and service support on the island.
Whatever brand you choose, the installation matters as much as the unit. A correct vacuum, proper pipe runs and a sound outdoor mount are what determine whether the AC lasts. A good unit installed badly will fail early.
