Wiping the vanes achieves nothing — the growth is deeper in. We chemically clean the coil, fan barrel and drain pan and clear the drain line so it does not simply return.
The order we check things in
Mould on an AC is a drainage and drying problem before it is a hygiene one. The vanes you can see are the last surface to show it; by the time black spots appear there, the fan barrel and the drain pan have been damp and dirty for months. Bali supplies the humidity, dust supplies the food, and a unit that is switched off wet after a couple of hours supplies the standing water. We check the pan and the drain line first, because a coil cleaned above a pan that cannot empty will look right for about three weeks.
What you can check yourself first
Do not attack the vanes with bleach — it damages the plastic, it does not reach the growth, and it puts the smell back into the room. What genuinely helps is running the unit on fan-only for fifteen to twenty minutes after cooling so the coil dries, or using the self-dry setting if it has one. Once mould is visible it needs a chemical clean of coil, fan barrel and pan at Rp125,000 for a standard 0.5–1 PK unit; where it is well established a deep clean at Rp250,000 takes the indoor unit off the wall to reach behind the barrel.
