AC Smells Bad in Bali
A sour or musty AC smell usually comes from mold, bacteria, dirty fan blades or standing water inside the drain pan.

The order we check things in
A sour or musty smell is biological, and it comes from the wet parts of the indoor unit rather than from anything you can see on the filter. Condensation keeps the coil, the fan barrel and the drain pan damp, dust settles on them, and in Bali's humidity mould establishes on that quickly — particularly on units that run intermittently and never fully dry. The smell always arrives before any drop in cooling, which is why it is the earliest useful warning a unit gives you. A separate and much rarer cause is a dead animal in the outdoor unit, which smells different and worse.
What you can check yourself first
Rinsing the filters will not fix it: the growth is behind them, on the fan barrel and in the pan, where a filter rinse cannot reach. Running the unit on fan-only for twenty minutes after cooling helps dry it out and slows the smell coming back, and some units have a self-dry setting that does the same thing. But once the smell is established it needs chemical cleaning of the coil, fan barrel and drain pan — Rp125,000 for a standard 0.5–1 PK unit including the outdoor condenser, with 14 days of warranty.
